The study of mathematics fosters the development of clear and logical thinking, precision in communication, and the ability to reason quantitatively. Using the traditional progression of college-preparatory courses, the mathematics curriculum of Queen Anne School seeks to encourage student growth and proficiency in these areas. Each student is exposed to the variety of the field of mathematics, both concrete and abstract, and is allowed the opportunity, according to interest and talent, to develop fully in the subject. The philosophy of the Queen Anne School Mathematics Department is to ensure accurate placement of students in courses that are an accurate reflection of their background and aptitude. Upon admission to Queen Anne School, all students are administered a placement test, and are placed in a course that will challenge them appropriately.
The teachers at Queen Anne believe that students should be thoroughly grounded in the fundamentals of mathematics, be able to make connections between topics of mathematics, and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems. They should be able to do this confidently and effectively, by themselves and in cooperation with others. The mathematics faculty is well qualified and keeps abreast of developments in new technology and teaching methods.
