Welcome!
As a visitor to this "class example"you have the opportunity to explore organism interactions through the definitions, images, text resources, and interactive quizzes made available in its pages. The “Symbiosis” section of “Organism Interaction” details one of the most complex forms of animal interaction – different species reliant upon other species for their physiological, social, ecological, and/or evolutionary well-being/success.
Some specific details:
- While the resources of this site may provide interest for people of all ages, the “Symbiosis” section is designed for individuals who have successfully completed a high school biology course.
- Bibliographic references to popular and peer-reviewed literature, plus hyperlinks to material found on the World Wide Web. References were selected to encourage further research into organism interaction and to provide support to discussions of the site’s subject matter. The "Reference Database" (disabled in this example) is a growing collection - please feel free to submit new resources by sending me a copy or full bibliographic reference (please, no abbreviations).
- Terminology and definitions were selected for clarity of expression and effective conveyance of ideas.
- The "Reference Database" (disabled in this example) is organized using the Dewey Decimal System combined with specific keywords to make user searches more successful.
- Images were created and processed to highlight recognized examples of the different forms of organism interaction, and, where appropriate, to provide opportunities for visitors to self-test their understanding of the definitions through application to new situations.
- The site starts with a general text and visual presentation of interactions between organisms and, through subsequent layers of web pages, moves to greater specificity of how organisms relate to each other. The "Symbiosis" section of the site continues the site layout, adding a Java enabled mechanism (Internet Explorer users only) to enable visitors to review key sub-group definitions reinforced by expert-recognized pictorial examples.
- A basic interactive review quiz is available on the site.
- A site-specific search engine (currently disabled) is available to aid in the location of specific examples.
- The color scheme of the site is designed to help reinforce relationships between the different definitions. From left to right the terms are organized as low impact interaction to high impact interaction.
- The hyperlink (click-able link) structure of the site is designed to encourage the visitor to stay on the current page until the whole page has been read and interacted with in a meaningful way. The exception to this structure is the links to where a visitor has just been on the site.
- This site is used as a supplement to the Queen Anne School Environmental Science class. The "Organism Interaction" site links to the Environmental Science class site through the "Class Site" link (currently disabled) and requires a password to enter.
